Spotlight Poetry – As Twilight Fades – A Remembrance Poem by Goff James

The image depicts a painting titled Poppy Field by the artist Mark Kremer. The work is a realist landscape painting. The work shows a narrow strip of wheat field, covered with a barely perceptible light haze of clouds, gleams with gold in the background of the picture. The bright blue sky is sun-drenched. The tall trees with their broad branchy crowns, like guards, guarding untouched beauty, lined around the field of bright red poppies. Large scarlet flowers in the foreground of the picture. Looking at the picture, it seems as if a bright red path indicates a way somewhere in the distance, to the sun. The image supports the poem As Twilight Fades written by the poet Goff James.

As Twilight Fades by Goff James

Twilight fades into

The darkness of the night
Cross Flanders aching war torn fields
Pain lit memories waking rise

Silence weeping grieves and mourns as
Blood stained shadows stretching reach

O’er those who fell and laid their heads
To rest beneath the mud churned earth

Sacrificed themselves for
Freedoms sacred glorious grace
Lest we forget where poppies grow
The dreadful horrors woven then and now

The wooded hills where rivers run
Winged upon the fragranced breeze

The birds shall pipe their hallowed names
At each new breaking dawn
