Spotlight Poetry – As Twilight Fades – A Remembrance Poem by Goff James

The image depicts a painting titled Poppy Field by the artist Mark Kremer. The work is a realist landscape painting. The work shows a narrow strip of wheat field, covered with a barely perceptible light haze of clouds, gleams with gold in the background of the picture. The bright blue sky is sun-drenched. The tall trees with their broad branchy crowns, like guards, guarding untouched beauty, lined around the field of bright red poppies. Large scarlet flowers in the foreground of the picture. Looking at the picture, it seems as if a bright red path indicates a way somewhere in the distance, to the sun. The image supports the poem As Twilight Fades written by the poet Goff James.

As Twilight Fades by Goff James

As
Twilight fades into

The darkness of the night
Cross Flanders aching war torn fields
Pain lit memories waking rise

Ageless
Silence weeping grieves and mourns as
Blood stained shadows stretching reach

O’er those who fell and laid their heads
To rest beneath the mud churned earth

And
Sacrificed themselves for
Freedoms sacred glorious grace
Lest we forget where poppies grow
The dreadful horrors woven then and now

Above
The wooded hills where rivers run
Winged upon the fragranced breeze

The birds shall pipe their hallowed names
At each new breaking dawn

Never Never Walk Alone by Goff James

Neath the stars and moon
Whilst small children sleep and dream

Ghosts and monsters wake
Through night’s shadowed streets they roam
Celebrating Hallowe’en

Never never be afraid
But never never walk alone
Passed the wildwood in the lane

Neath the stars and moon
Whilst small children sleep and dream

From dark dusk to dawn
O’er the hills and tree tops high
Witches on their broomsticks fly

Never never be afraid
But never never walk alone
Passed the wildwood in the lane

Neath the stars and moon
Whilst small children sleep and dream

Daylight softly creeps
Ghouls and demons disappear
Witches wipe their cauldron’s clean

Never never be afraid
But never never walk alone
Passed the wildwood in the lane

Neath the noonday sun
Whilst small children run and play

Pumpkins stare and smile
Witches ghouls and monsters fled
Trick and treating put away

Never never be afraid
But never never walk alone
Passed the wildwood in the lane

Poetry – How Far – A poem by Goff James

How Far – A poem by Goff James

Winter’s dark road
Frozen bleak
How far
How far
My dear old friend

How far
How far
Before we stop and rest
The night is biting chilled

How far
How far
To journey’s end
Not far
Not far

How far
How far
For I am weary
My dear old friend
How far
How far

Not far my friend
Not far my friend
Lo yonder lies
Tomorrow’s sun

How far
How far
I cannot see
For I am weary
My dear old friend

Hold my hand
Lead me
Lead me
Hold my hand
For I am broken
My dear old friend

How far
How far
To heaven’s gate
Not far
Not far

How far
How far
So I may lay my head
And sleep fore’er in
Paradise

Not far my friend
Not far my friend
