Cucuteni Figurine – Romania
The Cucuteni Figurine an early Romanian terracotta work from the Neolithic Cucuteni Culture, dating from c. 4500 – 3000 BCE National – Museum of Romanian History, Bucharest.
The Cucuteni culture was was a society of small-scale agriculturalists and shared many characteristics of the BalkanNeolithic cultures.
Most Cucuteni settlements produced groups of human figurines. The standing figurine above is: simply executed, decorated in a highly stylistic manner, possessing deeply incised elaborate markings, lacking lower legs, feet and arms and abstract minimalist head.
The unknown artist appears to have been primarily concerned with overall shape and decoration. The figurine is decorated on both sides.
The figurine’s status as a depiction of a human form is quite clear; however; its purpose of intent and function remain a mystery.
