Please to Remember by Walter de la Mare

‘Remember, remember, the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot.’

On November 5th., 1605 , Guy Fawkes was arrested for his part in a plot to assassinate the king, James 1st., by blowing up the House of Lords (London).

To celebrate the King’s survival, bonfires were lit around the country.

This annual tradition has only developed over the last few centuries, with the addition of fireworks, and, of course the making of an effigy of Guy Fawkes to place on top of the bonfire.
